In addition to painting in oils, I also enjoy painting with other medium such as gouache which has some crossovers with painting in oils. There are marked differences though, notably the rapid drying time and tonal shifts as it dries (lights shift darker and darks shift lighter). Once compensated for these factors become less of a problem and even something to take advantage from at times. I love the mat, velvety finish of gouache and it is an ideal medium for creating small studies, either on location or in the studio when working from plein air pieces.
